Why would a woman be prescribed FLOMAX?

Flomax is the brand of a drug called tamsulosin. It is used to treat a medical problem in men called benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The drug has been used "off label" for other medical problems which may effect men and women. An "off label" use of a drug means an unapproved use. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves drugs for specific medical problems. Doctors may determine through research or experience that the drug may help in other illnesses.

Tamsulosin is used for neurogenic bladder where the nerve supply to the bladder is not working well, causing the bladder to leak urine. Tamsulosin is also used for people with spinal cord injuries effecting bladder function. When other therapies do not work to treat various urination difficulties, tamsulosin has been used.

Both men and women may have taken tamsulosin for these unapproved uses.

I`m 55, exercise and eat well. I take hydrochlorothiazide (25 mg) to control my blood pressure. I`ve had have trouble falling asleep so began taking Tylenol PM a few months ago, which helps me fall asleep faster and stay asleep, especially by relieving congestion that often keeps me awake. (I stopped taking OTC cold/congestion medications 5 years ago, also tried lunesta for about a month then stopped from fear of side effects). I don`t take tylenol any other time of day, and rarely any other meds - I avoid them if possible. I`ve gone against this however with the Tylenol PM, and now wonder if it`s unwise to take it for extended periods of time. (I like it because it relieves congestion, foot/leg aches, pains, twitches, and does help me sleep.)

Tylenol PM contains two active ingredients, acetaminophen 500mg and diphenhydramine 25mg. Acetaminophen is used to treat pain and fever. Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine used for mild nighttime sedation as well as relief of nasal allergies, mild dermatosis, and motion sickness.

While acetaminophen is regarded as one of the safest pain relievers, long-term use of high dose acetaminophen can lead to liver damage. Another factor that increases the risk of liver damage from acetaminophen is alcohol consumption. In addition to Tylenol's Simply Sleep®, there are several OTC sleep aids that contain the diphenhydramine component only.

You should discuss your choice of sleep-aid with your physician. He or she should be able to evaluate the potential for any underlying health risks that may apply in your individual circumstance and advise you as to what is the best option for you.

My husband was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and rapid heartbeat last year. he was treated with amiodarone and heart and blood pressure meds. last week he was taken to emergency room with chest pain and rapid hearbeat/atrial fibrillation. he spent a week in the hospital. they finally determined that he had hyperthyroidism. could the amiodarone have caused hyperthyroidism?

Amiodarone can effect thyroid function. Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism have been caused by amiodarone therapy. These changes in thyroid function seemed to occur more often in patients on high doses of amiodarone, but may be unrelated to dose or length of therapy. A past history of thyroid disease may be a risk factor for amiodarone caused thyroid problems. The amount of iodine in the diet may also be a factor.

Discuss your concerns with the heart doctor involved in this case.

Can Celebrex cause muscle weakness and stiffness? Also does it cause you to bleed under your skin and have what look like blood blisters.
Celebrex is the brand name of celecoxib, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID. Celecoxib can cause joint or muscle pain or stiffness. If this side effect continues or is bothersome, see your doctor. Celecoxib does not generally cause bleeding under the skin. The drug can cause various skin reactions. The reaction you are describing should be checked by your doctor.

My father is 73 and has been taking Celebrex for about 8 years. He is having some neurological problems. Could the extended use of this drug cause those kind of problems?

Celebrex(R) is a brand of celecoxib. Neurological symptoms are not common or expected in older people. Use of celecoxib for a long time may cause ulcers, bleeding or holes in the stomach or intestines. Older people may be more likely to have this side effect.

Please discuss the symptoms you are worried about with the family doctor.

My son takes medications for ADHD during the day Ritalin10mg and Concerta36mg and also medications to help him sleep at night Abilify5mg and Clonodine.1mg well i told him to get his night medications and he took it without me seeing what he had first.o he took one Ritalin instead of Clonodine and half of the Abilify, so my question is," It it safe to take those medications at the same time?

Ritalin and Concerta are brand names for the drug methylphenidate. Abilify is the brand name of aripiprazole. Clonidine is a generic name.

Methylphenidate, aripiprazole and clonidine can be used together without problem. These drugs are compatible.

When a medication mistake happens, call your doctor or poison control center for help.

To prevent medication mistakes, consider using a daily pill planner. This is a container for sorting pills by day of the week and time of day the pill is used. Always read the label on the medicine bottle. Adults in the home should carefully supervise the taking of pills.

Hello, After being on Mobic 7.5 twice per day for several years, I was recently switched to the generic version and have experienced a noticable increase in my pain levels. I know that meloxicam is an AB rated generic, but it seems something must be different. Do you have any additional information for me? Thanks

Meloxicam has been certified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be equal to Mobic. The link below provides information on how the FDA can say a generic drug such as meloxicam works as well as the brand name drug, Mobic. Additional reports in medical articles also say the generic forms of meloxicam are equal.

Let your doctor know about your pain. Other factors may be increasing your pain.
